We’ve got something “In the ‘Works” for tonight

Over the years, we’ve sporadically put out a company newsletter recapping some of the latest news on our games — stuff that you could read here on the blog… just days/weeks later. Moving forward, we’re taking a new approach to the newsletter — providing new and exciting information on our games, events, etc. We call it In The ‘Works (get it??).

Beginning tonight, the new community newsletter is planned to release on the last Thursday of every month. And each month, you can expect something new. To kick things off, we’re focusing on QuakeCon 2010, which is only two weeks away. Subscribers can expect to learn some exciting news about the event.* And whether you’re a current subscriber or a new subscriber, you’ll be entered for a chance to win one of five RAGE t-shirts.

We hope you enjoy this new format!

*If you’re expecting a game announcement, sorry. That’s not In The ‘Works.

StarCraft II Has Lots Of Credits (Video)

As I was soothed by the sweet sounds of Level 800 Elite Tauren Chieftain rocking out with "Terran Up The Night," it struck me that I had been watching these credits roll for three minutes. On fast forward.

Blizzard's in-house metal band and their horrific puns aside, the credits for StarCraft II are crazy long. Props for giving us the option to fast-forward them, though. Too bad there's no Skeletor (Ben Reeves' term for post-credits bonus material), though.

Review Of Alan Wake: The Signal

Alan Wake's ending is open for interpretation. Some people believe the dark presence exists in Alan's world. Others see it as a figment of a mental patient's mind. A few souls out there will even tell you that Alan Wake is just a character in a book.

I believed strongly in one of these possibilities...until I played through Alan Wake's first DLC offering The Signal. The game didn't sway me to a new possibility, nor did it make me believe my theory was invalid. Instead of giving an answer, or even a few clues to point toward the correct theory, The Signal recognizes and teases every conceivable outcome, and in the end, just made me all the more confused. I'm now of the mind that any and all theories are correct. I'm even beginning to think that Alan Wake may have been abducted by aliens.

If you went into this DLC expecting answers, you'll undoubtedly be disappointed. However, if you just want to play around with a flashlight more, you're going to love what Remedy has cooked up. The Signal offers the game's most dynamic gameplay. Enemies swarm in great... [Read More]

Most Gamers Don't Want Change, No Matter How Much They May Say It
"Recently,I feel that I've been reading more and more that people think thegaming industry is running itself into a rut. That we're just gettingthe same types of games; shooter after shooter, open world game afteropen world game...We're killing the chances at making somethingoriginal and different for more and more of the same. The fix for thiswould be simple, no? Just try and create more and more original gamesand eventually people will move on, right? Well, it really isn't thatsimple." Do you agree with Hawk_hotlips?

StarCraft II: Micro 101

A lot of people get scared when the ominous specter of micromanagement in a real-time strategy game is invoked. It sounds a lot harder than it is, though, and these simple tips can elevate your game. In the interests of clarity I'm going to focus on Terran units here, but the concepts are just as easily applied to other races.

Micromanagement refers to giving units tactical orders in combat in order to maximize their effectiveness. If you're more concerned with macromanagement -- optimizing your resource gathering and unit production -- check out yesterday's Macro 101 tips.

(Before moving on, please note that the above pictured tactic of blocking a chokepoint with perma-cloaked Dark Templar on "hold ground" with Immortals and Colossi backing them up is total hax, and should not be tried at home without leet supervision.)

***

Understand hotkeys and unit selection! This is real basic, but remember that you can hotkey and select units in several ways:
  • Shift-click (or shift-drag) will add/remove units to/from the current selection
  • Control-click (or double-click)

The Quick 15: Deadliest Warrior

Deadliest Warrior: The Game hit Xbox Live Arcade a few weeks ago (and is coming to the PlayStation Network soon), but it sailed right under the radar. Was that for the better? We played around with the game's one-on-one local multiplayer for a while and have 15 minutes of raw footage to show for it. It's a punishing game similar to Bushido Blade, in that matches can end in seconds if you don't defend yourself properly. Also, you can lose limbs and your noggin if you aren't careful. This video is overflowing with button mashing, but it at least gives you a taste of what the game's about.

2D Worms Gameplay Returns To PC In August

Apparently it's been a long time since a new 2D Worms game has appeared on PC. Now Worms Reloaded is going to end the dry spell on August 26.

The game will include over 60 single-player levels, a map editor, nearly 50 different old and new weapon types, up to four-player online and offline multiplayer, achievements, and leaderboards.

Fans who pre-order the game on Steam will save 10 percent off the price of $19.99, be able to play the game a day early, and get "exclusive in-game items."

[UPDATE] Kill A Gears of War Character...For Charity!

[Update]: You can now purchase the Avatar shirts that will determine Carmine's fate in Gears of War 3. They are available for 80 Microsoft Points ($1) via the Xbox Live Marketplace. Remember, all proceeds will go to Child's Play, a charity that provides games and books to children's hospitals for sick kids across North America.

[Original Story]: Do you have a sadistic bent? Now is your time to shine! Another Carmine brother is joining Delta-One in Gears of War 3, and your actions will determine whether he lives to see another day or continues the family legacy of biting the dust like a Spinal Tap drummer.

All you need to do to send this guy into oblivion is purchase a "Carmine Must Die" T-shirt for your Xbox Live Avatar. If you're a sally who plays Alliance in World of Warcraft and roots for do-gooders in films, you can try to stem the tide of violence by purchasing "Save Carmine" shirts. The virtual tees go on sale July 29, but if you're attending San Diego Comic Con you can cast your vote early by picking up a real $20 T-shirt at the NECA... [Read More]

Conduit 2 Box Art Revealed

Today Sega revealed the box art for High Voltage Studio's Wii-exclusive FPS, Conduit 2. Let's make fun of it, shall we?

Actually, aside from the "Single, Split-Screen, And Online Combat" slogan, this cover is pretty wicked: It has a futuristic robot/space marine dude, a giant gun that apparently shoots lava, and lots of fire and explosions -- probably due to the giant gun that shoots lava. What do you guys think?

Analyst's Pick For Biggest XBLA Title In 2010 May Surprise You

The firm Research & Analysis Digital Entertainment has released some interesting info on Microsoft's online marketplace. It estimates that the Xbox Live Marketplace has pulled in $46.1 million from the beginning of January through the end of June. That's a 13 percent increase so far in 2010, and FADE says that factors including a redesigned 360, Kinect marketing, and the holiday lineup could push Xbox Live revenue to between $130 million to $140 million by the end of the year.

In addition, FADE released a top 10 Xbox Live games for the first half of 2010, ranked by revenue. The number one position, according to the firm, is taken by Signal Studios' Toy Soldiers. It beat out games including Trials HD, Castle Crashers, and Battlefield 1943. It's important to note that some of the other games in the rankings are priced lower or went on sale at some point during the time period. That said, it's still an impressive take. Here's the complete list:

* Toy Soldiers (Signal Studios) - $4.6 million (1200 Microsoft Points)
* Trials HD (RedLynx) - $4.4 million (800 - 1200 Microsoft Points)
* Castle Crashers (The Behemoth) - $2.9 million (800 - 1200 Microsoft Points)
*... [Read More]

Founders Jesper Rudberg and Anders Pistol cut their teeth at Starbreeze and DICE, working on such titles as Mirror's Edge, Riddick, and The Darkness. Now, the company's first game, Puzzle Dimension has hit Steam, and looks to be an intriguing experience for fans of the genre. Sony Breaks Trend, Posts Quarterly Profits

Breaking the trend established by Nintendo and Capcom this morning, Sony’s reoccurring losses shifted from the red this quarter. Reporting a profit of $295 million this financial period, the jump is substantial considering the $426.7 million loss the same timeframe in 2009. Total yearly earnings are slated at $190 billion, again a increase from the $179 billion reported last year.

Moving into the gaming-specific subdivisions of Sony, the Networked Product and Services Division (which Sony Computer Entertainment is a part of, measured a sales increase by 32.4 percent. The division still posted a loss of $43 million (an improvement from last year’s $378 million), to which Sony credits to poor exchange rates, a similar story as Nintendo’s.

What can Sony credit for the financial turnaround? Sony vouches that the Computer... [Read More]
